Rachel Pagano replaced John Kelinhans as Chairman of the Vermont College Republicans in February. Before becoming state chairman she was the vice-chairman of the Vermont College Republicans and the president of the Middlebury College Republicans. She is very excited to continue the great work John Kleinhans has done over the last two years and to get to know as many Vermont Republicans as possible. Paul Atkins visits Middlebury College

Paul Atkins former member of the Securities and Exchange Commission will be coming to Middlebury College to give a lecture on the financial crisis entitled “The Financial Crisis: Yesterday’s Shock and Today’s Hangover”. In his lecture he will try to explain the causes of the economic crisis and give an inside view into political thought before the economic collapse. He was also share his thoughts on what should be done in the future to ensure a strong American economy.

Two weekends ago College Republicans from Vermont attended the Conservative Action PAC’s yearly conference hearing speeches from many distinguished conservatives including Marco Rubio, Scott Brown, Genn Beck and Gov. Pawlenty.

John Kleinhans to step down as Vermont College Republican State Chairman

John Kleinhans has formally announced his resignation for Chairman of the Vermont College Republicans. Kleinhans was elected in December of 2008 and has grown the organization from five total members to over one hundred and fifty members in less than one years. He was named as one of the top 12 College Republicans in the United States in 2009 by the College Republican National Committee.

Kleinhans named Chairman of Caledonia County Republican Committee

This past week, Vermont College Republican Chairman John Kleinhans, was named Chairman of the Caledonia County Republican Committee. Kleinhans was named after Chairman Steve Larrabee became Chairman of the Vermont Republican Party.

Kleinhans is now the youngest county chairman in Vermont and is looking to improve relatinships amongst the entire county with technology. He plans to incoporate Facebook and Twitter with the many crucial campaigns for 2010.

Members of the Vermont College Republicans were seen in great numbers at the Mad River Valley GOP dinner. There were nine members from Lyndon State College, while there were also two members from Middlebury College in attendance! Chairman John Kleinhans spoke to the crowd of over 100 and told the group of the great success that the organization is seeing. He spoke of the internship program and of the upcoming New England College Republican Convention.

This past week, Lyndon State College held their annual club fair. The College Republicans were out there in full force this year adding an additional 22 students to the club. The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Thomas Frieden, has proposed a new tax on a staple of the average Americans diet: soda.

Many in the Obama administration believe the tax will decrease the obesity rate while raising money to help fight the federal deficit. A federal tax on soda would raise the price of the average container of soda by two or three cents.

More overweight people drink soda then that of skinny people, so it would appear that Frieden has the right intentions. Trouble is, there’s no real reason to target soda. Americans are known to head for ice cream trucks, bars, burger joints, Shoney’s, fast food restaurants, and even the cookie jar when no one’s looking. Why single out 140-calorie sodas, especially since anyone with a modicum of self-control can opt for a diet version of their favorite drink?

The other major problem with the plan is that the enormous cost of smoking has proven that high costs won’t deter people from harming themselves. Smokers spend approximately a zillion dollars a year to destroy their lungs and take the edge off. Are we to believe an extra three cents will prevent people from popping open a soda, especially since the delicious fuzzy beverages have far fewer harmful effects?

This is yet another tax to add to the list that the Obama administration is racking up, one that will increase the price of a common good. Still, it’s only a few cents. Now that’s change we can believe in.
